The .SE country-specific domain extension was created in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration process was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domains were acquired. Persons were permitted to obtain no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a prerequisite, i.e. only Swedish persons, business entities and organizations were able to order a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized a lot and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been growing each year.

At present, anyone can acquire a .SE domain, which allows you to contact the Swedish Internet community even if you do not have a local presence.
